The Central African Republic joined TNA Phase III and finalised its TNA in 2023. It’s TNA prioritised Agriculture, Water, Energy, and Forestry.
Subsistence agriculture, together with forestry and mining, constitute the backbone of The Central African Republic economy. The agricultural sector generates more than half of estimated GDP, and timber, diamonds and cotton account for most export earnings.
Over the coming years, climate change is expected to lead increasingly to changes in rainfall patterns, with droughts occurring more frequently and lasting longer. The increase in temperature and the decrease in rainfall will lead to reductions in the duration of the rainy season, increasing evaporation and the desiccation of already poor soils, thus impacting on the agricultural calendar. Pastoralism, the livelihood of a significant number of the rural population, may also be affected by the change in rainfall patterns, as access to water is crucial during transhumance.
The CAR’s TNA has identified pathways for building national resilience and creating a technology action plan to implement solutions. Prioritized technologies for water resources include small dams, borehole water de-ironing, and horizontal sand filtration for drinking water.
