Climate technologies are critical for our response to the climate crisis and national climate planning.

Since 2009, the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, UNEP, and the UNFCCC Secretariat, have led the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded Global Technology Needs Assessments (TNA) project in more than 100 developing countries.

The TNA project supports countries to identify and assess their technology needs and develop and Technology Action Plans (TAPs) for selected priority sectors and technologies based on social, economic, environmental, and climate criteria.

TNAs and TAPs then assist each country toward the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within the TNA project, countries also develop project concept notes targeted at financial and technical support institutions, aiming to develop TAPs into implemented projects.

At the 2025 global TNA workshop, representatives from the 34 countries participating in the fourth and fifth phase of the Global TNA Project will share their experiences in conducting and reporting TNAs and TAPs, discuss the integration of TNAs into NDCs and NAPs and other national processes, and engage in dialogues on how to enhance collaboration and investment in technology and implementation in developing countries.

Representatives, from governments, the private sector, financial institutions, multilateral development banks (MDBs), and other stakeholders, will discuss the TNAs and TAPs and their potential to provide insights into the capability and scale of climate change technologies. The discussions will emphasise how to scale up implementation through investment in climate technologies and how to collaborate on investments and the upscaling of climate technology priorities.
