Ethiopia started its TNA process in 2020 as part of the TNA IV project, and has prioritised the Agriculture and Water sectors for adaptation, and the Livestock and Forestry sectors for mitigation.
Ethiopia is a landlocked country located near the Horn of Africa and bordering Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan. Over the past seven years, Ethiopia has been able to register an average growth rate of 11%, making it one of the top performing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy, employing 85% of the population.
As climate change is expected to increase temperatures, causing more heatwaves, droughts and erratic rainfall, and making the rainy seasons unpredictable, agricultural production, raising livestock, water resources and human health will all be severely impacted.
In its first NDC, Ethiopia intends to limit its net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 145 Mt of CO2 or lower by 2030. This would constitute a 255 Mt reduction in CO2 from the projected business as usual emissions in 2030, or a 64% reduction from the business as usual scenario in the same year.
